This can be the most fun thing to do yet it can also be very stressful. This is because most kids are always excited to just leave home and go. They like adventure and discovering new places. They are however, naive to how to prepare for travel or what can go wrong during travel.
You must think for them in detail regarding what they will wear, eat and where to sleep. Remember to plan how they will spend time during the journey. This is because their attention span is very short and they can get bored very easily.
Toilet emergencies?
The other day I was traveling with my four and half year daughter to a weekend out of town and we were both excited to leave home. We had hardly driven for 20km when she just told me she wanted to make use of the toilet! Just like that..In the middle of the highway. I was supposed to show her as quickly as possible the toilet with no waste of time otherwise it would be too late for she would mess herself. This and other demands from the children can make your travel quite stressful unless well planned.
Here therefore are TIPS to help you have stress free travel with your children.
- Pack enough clothes in case of need to change. Children may need to change their clothes while on the journey, however short. And this may depend on their age
- Let the children visit the toilet before you embark on the journey. This will save you time and headache
- Explain to the children in their own language that you will be taking a long journey so that they are mentally prepared because the questions that come are myriad
- Have games and a variety of activities to occupy them during travel
- Carry pillows or neck support because they will fall asleep especially if the journey is a long one
- Carry lots of snacks and drinking water
- Educate them as you move along. This can be fun for both of you
- Remember to carry their recreational items like swimming costumes and toys
- As you also carry protective wear, remember to carry sunglasses, sunscreen for their use. Their skin is much more sensitive than yours.
- If possible travel with another child of the same age. There is so much fun in children having company of other children. They will play along the way, keep each other company and they will get to the destination long before they know it
