Making profits amid covid-19 protocols in the hospitality business

The hospitality industry has been hard hit by the covid-19 pandemic and some of the businesses may never see the light of day after suffering massive losses. We personally closed our enterprise in 2021 after the covid-19 confirmations in the country. Since covid-19 may not be going away any time soon, we may just have to learn how to go on the business with the pandemic.

The aim is to decrease the chances of transmissions protecting customers, staff and owners of these businesses and still be able to make money

Some of the ways these can be done is to utilize the low hanging fruits including being vaccinated as this is a free government service. All hosts and staff should be vaccinated and be able to follow all the laid down protocols to prevent any risk of transmissions to guests. Remember if members fall ill this may mean closing up or using more resources to set everything back on track.

3 ways to minimize this risk and still make profits

  1. Meticulous cleaning and disinfection. Once a guest leaves, the room and linen should be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected using 5% hypochlorite derivatives and soap detergents that have been shown to get rid of the virus. Where possible the linen should be aired in direct sunlight before reuse. This therefore means we need more linen to do this effectively. All cutlery should be cleaned with hot water and soap. Buying all cleaning materials in bulk will help reduce this cost. Fumigation can be done regularly but has been shown to be ineffective for covid19  . This will certainly bring the cost of running such facilities high but better be safe than sorry. To make sure this does not eat into profits you may decide to increase the customer payments but be cognizant of the prevailing deep in earning capacity of many people.
  2. As you receive guests confirm that they are vaccinated by showing you the registration certificate. The vaccination is given free of charge at the government and private health care institutions so no one needs to come with an excuse for not having it. Just let people know that they cannot use your facility without the vaccinations.
  3. As you check-in the guests, there is need to reduce the contact points by using online check-ins, having screens at the reception. Temperature checks, provision of sanitizers based on at least 70% alcohol and hand washing soap in all areas are a crucial way to ensure the risk is minimized. We also need to over stress the importance of use of masks in all public areas as well as keeping a safe distance between all people at the facility. As you can see this then reduces the number of people you may be able to host. To make sure this still works, give the best user experience and charge a premium. You will always get the people coming back because they get value for their money.

When all is said and done, we need to be well enough to enjoy doing the business and the fulfillment that comes with it. Let us enjoy the journey.
